In the process of buying a 1964 John Deere 3020 with front end loader. When the tractor is sitting at a cold idle there is a tick sound every few seconds in the hydraulics. Sounds like a valve. The noise stops when you use the hydraulics and when the hyd oil warms up. Any ideas what this could be? Thanks.

Check the frt hyd pump coupler for wear/looseness

Thanks for reply Jim. It does sound like the noise could be coming from there. I've tried to wiggle it few times now and there hasn't been any movement. Seems there is too much pressure on coupler or it's still good. Maybe I could crank engine by hand to remove pressure, then check for looseness? Will let you know if I figure it out. Thanks.

Between the two-parts of the. corupler there usually is a hard peace of rubber / plastic if it's cracking or brittle it is most likely broken in peaces on the inside.

If pump drive is the noise more than likely it's worn out bushings(parts key #4) or under extreme worn conditions the clamps(parts key #2) will require replacement.
