After reading previous posts on this, it looks like the only place that has ready made hydraulic toplinks that are short enough, about 18”, when fully retracted is Gearmore. From what I gather the length ranges from 18” to 26” (My toplink length ranges from 18” to 27”, so I’d lose and inch on the overall length.). The part number is T3x8-18 and the cost is $270, is that right?. Does that price include shipping? Is this the place? http://www.gearmore.com? I didn’t see any hydraulic cylinders listed anywhere. Is the phone number 909 548-4848?

I called the NH dealer and they sell Tisco toplink cylinders. They have one that’s 15” from hole to hole retracted with an 8” stroke, which would actually be too short for me. The next size up is a 20” with 8” stroke. They sell for $191. They also have side link ones for the same price. A 20” stroke would probably be fine for me, since I can’t remember ever having to use mine at it’s shortest length for anything. But, didn’t someone recommend staying away from Tisco?

Danny,
You state that your factory toplink ranges from 18" to 27". I belive your toplink should be the same as the one on my TC33D. I would leave at least an inch or so of threads on each side of the toplink in order for it to be strong enough for ground engaging equipment. I figured that I could only extend mine to about 22 1/4" from the center of eye to eye. The Gearmore toplink gave me a lot more range than the factory toplink.

I paid about $17 for shipping from California to Michigan. It took about a week to get here. I asked them to email me the tracking number so I could watch its progress across the country. I do not believe they have any information on their website about these cylinders.

You may want to try the shorter Tisco cylinder first. I believe you can get one for about half the price of the Gearmore. I like to use my rear blade going in reverse and having a shorter toplink would allow me to get a more aggressive bite with my rear blade. If you do try a shorter tisco and you don't like it I would consider buying it from you at a discount.

Whatever you do - GET ONE - and get it soon. They are wonderful, I think they should be standard equipment on these sweet New Hollands.

Spence - Thanks. I’ll double check my measurements, but what I recall doing was screwing both ends all the way in, then while holding the outer one (not attached to the tractor) so it couldn’t turn, I turned the center section until I came to the part where there is a gap in the threads. That’s how I got the 27” length. I seem to recall unscrewing it the rest of the way and there was about an inch of threads past the gap. But, I’ll do it all again to make sure. I expect to be doing a lot of work with my rear scoop and my grader blade this summer, so it will be handy!

Danny, That sounds right if you are talking overall length and not the eye to eye centers. The specs on the Gearmore (and all others) are measured from the center of one eye to the center of the other eye.

You're right, it is too short. Also, I believe the range of motion is shorter than you indicate. I looked at one from my dealer and decided even if I welded on something to lengthen it, it did not have the range of adjustment I wanted. I ended up with the longer unit (20" - 28", I believe). After trying it with my box blade, I decided it was a bit too long, so I had them cut a bit off the spacer on the non-working end. Now it works perfectly.

The only problem I have had with the Tisco cylinders is that they seem to "leak down" a bit over time. For example, if I'm brush-hogging, and set the toplink for a level carry, it will slowly lengthen over time, dropping the back of the mower. I'm not sure if this happens a bit with any cylinder?

John,

I think you're right. When I was looking, one NH dealer showed me a Tisco catalog for hydraulic top cylinders and the two sizes were 15" w/ 5" travel or 20" w/ 8" travel.
