Bought a new loader valve with a third spool to run a grapple or a snow plow. The tech guy I talked to recommended removing the third spool handle to avoid deadheading when no tool was attached. What's the difference between deadheading and moving a piston to the max? Thanks in advance.

I would leave the handle on. Actually, the advice you got doesn稚 even make sense to me, unless the guy just likes creating work for someone else.

As long as you have a properly functioning PRV (pressure relief valve), you'll have no issues.

I agree it really does not make (much) sense....but...if the third spool has a locking detent (for running something like a winch, log splitter etc) the lever can get accidentally bumped into the detent position...

It would be the same as holding the lift or curl levers to max.
It’s not a “deadhead”. A deadhead means fluid can’t be moved and the pump is “spinning its wheels”.
The pressure relief (bypass) valve is going to dump the pressure.
Don’t use it without the attachment and if you grab it by mistake, turn it loose and grab the right one. It won’t hurt anything unless you just leave it actuated in detent or holding it forever.
The fluid bypassing then theoretically could start getting hotter and hotter.
Just leave it on and don’t use it till needed.
