Tractor
case david brown
First let start by telling you i know nothing about tractors, however i am very mech. inclined as i have worked on machinery most of my life, now to my problem, i have a tractor,an old case david brown,60 or 62 hp,2 wheel drive.
put new batt. in it the other day ,cold out around 10-20degrees,tractor started but would not move hyd. would not work, when i let the clutch out was like it wanted to stall, after a few try it stoped doing that, and idled fine.I got down from the tractor and saw hyd. fluid leaking from the front.took batt. out and found a pump up front with a bolt striped out ,this is where the fluid is coming from.now i assum i had water in the hyd. system and it frozze,
I got the pump ready to remove which i will finish today,my question is how do I get the water out off the system and could this have caused any internal damage to my tractor?the tractor is like a 1976 case david brown any help would be greatly appreciated.
thank you,
Lester

You need to get the tractor to a warm place, and after replacing the pump or seal or whatever, connect everything back up and drain all the hyd fluid you can. Install new fluid and filter, and start the engine and let idle until hyd fluid is warm, and cycle everything and check for normal operation.

Freezing will split pipes valves, motors, pumps and anything that restricts expansion.

After everything is working normally, and you are through for the day, throw a tarp over the tractor if left outside.

thank you for replying so fast, the front pump had a stripped nut,the seal was pushed out at this nut,not sure how long seal had been like that, hard for me to beleave it was forced out, since it set in a slot on pump cover, then sandwitched between cover and pump housing, could it be someone before did not install seal in right last time it was apart,as for draining fluid not sure where drain plug is but sure if i look around under tractor i will be able to find it,same with filter i should be able to locate it also,if not i will buy a repair manual, what type of hyd. oil would you recommend for winter running?
thanks again'

It doesn't surprise me that it would extrude the seal at a loose fastener. Thick cold oil I'm sure created some high pressures and probably deflected the case/cover at that point. If this is a power shift tractor, you need to use the correct oil to protect the wet clutches. The Case oil has water dispersant? properties that protect those clutches. I have Walmart's equivalent oil (says it meets Case specs) in my older 1070 because that is what the previous owner had been running, but after reading over on Yesterdays Tractors site I'm thinking I need to change to the real McCoy at the next oil change. I had the PTO housing off this tractor which required draining the oil and there was some free water present. Having to rebuild a powershift due to clutches coming apart would be tough to swallow. Probably be looking for another tractor.

that cold thick oil might have made that fastener strip out too.. especially if there was water in the pump that froze..
