Doesn't sound likely. No over pressuring when this happened? Seems stange a key would shear in normal operation. Based on your sudden stoppage I would think pulling the pump may be needed.

Over pressuring is when your pump is dead headed. Could also be defined as when your loader valve is held as cylinders reach the end and you hear the loader relief valve going off. If the stop valve under the seat is closed and you pull your 3 point lift handle back this can overpressure the hydraulics. A gear pump knows no limits on pressure, if there is no relief devise the first thing to give is the pump drive key.

pull the pump. That would be what i do. IF its ok you put it back on and search some more. Its a few bolts on each line then 4 bolts that hold it to the engine, should not be a hard task.

I pulled the pump....shaft is intact altho it doesn't turn easily...is this normal?.....I do not see a key....would it be close to the nut connection on the end of the shaft?

thanx

Now that you have the pump off, might as well have a look inside, check condition. Couple of times right after I got my Yanmar, had this happen. Always ended up being a cloged filter in my case. After draining the fluid, open the little triangular plate with three screws and check to see if the filter is clean. First couple of years, even with frequent oil changes, filter got clogged. Inside of the case had to be real dirty on mine, think with frequent oil changes and filter cleaning, most is cleaned out. If you need a pump, Hoye has them at a reasonable price. Good luck.

UHH. I thought you had already pulled the filter/screen. If you had not drained fluid and pulled it out and checked it you need to do that first. I would not put the pump back on till you pull the plate and see the filter. If the filter looks clean and good then dig into the pump.
