Real basic question.
A cylinder has two working ports.
Which port cause the rod to open or extend?
Is it, the one in the back causes it to extend and the
one in the front to close? (Or is it backwards?)

I'm really new to this tractor stuff a bit overwhelming but it sure is fun!

I believe you have it correct, the port fartherest from the rod that extends, applies pressure to the end of the rod and pushes it out, the upper port nearest the rod that extends, applies pressure to retract the rod.
