I changed my Hydro/Trans fluid for the first time yesterday, with 144 hours on the L3400 HST. I run a backhoe and FEL, among other 3Pt items. What do you think? Too many shavings, just the amount expected, or lookin good?

I've seen much, much worse in other posts. I'd say the photo is well within expectation.

Was 144 hours the first fluid change or the first filter/fluid change? That is a wee bit beyond the 50 hr. advice.

Check the threads listed at the bottom of the web page titled "Similar Threads" to get an idea of what is normal or not so normal.

Good point, I did have the 50 Hours service done by the dealer, so I would suppose this is the 2nd time the fluids were changed, and the filters.

It looks about like mine at 200 hrs. First full fluid change.

You should search on old postings. That is less than other posters have shown.

From the frequency that new Kubotas show up with shavings in the oil some of us old timers have come to expect posts just like yours. Apparently Kubota does a poor job of cleaning their castings after machining. Either that, or they just expect the oil circulation to do it for them.

Most likely just machining swarf, nothing broken. However, after following this forum for a few years I've come to the opinion that a startlingly high number of Kubota problems turn out to be due to tiny piece of metal caught in a valve or control orifice.

I agree to run as normal for now and stick to your maintenance intervals. Is there a magnetic drain plug on this machine? Add one if so to help clear that stuff up. It is so disconcerting to see so much debris from the factory. If I were buying a new machine I would pay a premium to order it from the factory and travel myself to blow out the lines, clean the tanks, cover the fittings, and inspect the pumps. Contamination control has gone right out the window.

Instead of a magnetic drain plug which has only a small magnet, Kubotas have a large magnetic ring it the inlet to the suction filter so all oil entering the filter must first make it past the magnet. The picture is about how mine looked at it's second change, just shy of 400 hours.

Agreed. Sleep easy because this looks pretty typical.

No problems and probably on the low side of normal.
