I'm working on my JD skid and the hydro fan motor is seaping oil, causing the fan to throw oil everywhere. JD offers a seal kit for $250ish or a new motor for $1300. Any pointers on hydro motor reseal? Any luck crossing over to other companies for new motors?

Is it the shaft seal that is leaking or is it between the gear section and the endcovers? Do you have any pictures?

Repair Depends on style of motor and where the leak is. If gear motor where is the leak? Second question is why is it leaking?

It is leaking around the shaft. There was a thin metal plate, where rubber on the back side, that I removed before I took the first picture. It had oil behind it as soon as I stuck the pick in to work it off. Is that thin piece of metal the seal or just the dust shield? I didn't want to do a full rebuild as it is a low hour machine and that's a little more than I am comfortable with doing.

That's a Saur Danfoss gear motor. A good hydraulic shop should be able to easily get the seal kit or just the seal in question for less than $150 or even less than that.

For the $250 that JD wants just for the kit, you easily buy a new motor here in Europe.

Gomer,
Are there any valves in the end cover where the 3rd line comes out? I suspect that is a case drain line and make sure that is open to tank. That line is what should prevent the shaft seal from leaking.

No valves in the end cover

Typically those motors have a dust seal which rides on the shaft and then the shaft seal which is pressed into the end cover and held in place with a snap ring. The piece you pulled off with the pick was the dust seal. The shaft seal is still in the front cover and that is what is probably leaking.

Here would be a few companies that you could contact about getting the motor fixed:
