Why are most of the MF standard gear or shuttle? seems when i go to the dealer he does not have any Hydro and always wants to put me in one of them. what are the advantages and disadvantages?

also what is the difference in direct fuel injection and indirect? someone told me the MF and agco were harder to start because of the fuel injection systme they use.

help me buy red

thanks

The dealer might just prefer standard drive tractors. I do. I think a hydro tractor is easier to drive for most people though. I like the new large chassis MF hydro tractors though. The 1540 I drove with the hydro pedal hooked to the throttle made me rethink hydro drives. It was nice not having to have the engine rev so high all the time. If you really want a hydro just tell them. At least if he's sitting you on something you get the feel of the machine, a hydro wouldn't be much different.

Coupla lessons learned from my experiences:

1. Hydro is the cat's meow when it comes to loader work. It's so fast compared to even a clutchless powershuttle (like on my 1540) it isn't funny. It's also much more precise for using forks and loading up pallets on the loader.

2. I've heard, but not confirmed, that hydro isn't the best transmission for long, hard pulls such as in hay fields pulling mowers or balers. For this reason, and I didn't like the rocker hydro pedal on the MF, I went with the powershuttle. However, I have heard rumors that MF ditched the rocker hydro pedal in favor of twin-touch pedals (which are superior to a rocker setup, IMO).

Indirect injection has the fuel injected into a pre-chamber in the cylinder head where it ignites and lights the main cylinder. Direct injection heads have no pre-chamber and the fuel is injected directly into the cylinder above the piston.

When cold, glow the plugs for 6 seconds, start the engine.
When warm, turn the key and start the engine.

Is this hard starting? Maybe your friend just looks at his tractor and it starts up. That is the only thing that would make it any easier.

My Ford Powerstroke is direct injected and starts the same as I described.

Thanks that makes sense on both questions. Now you mind if i ask a couple more.

I really like the idea of the Massey name that is what my grandfather had, but he is gone and would not know if i got a green or blue. But in my heart i would like to think the red would be closer to his heart.

Any way is the platform, seat area as comfortable on an MF as a green or blue? The control for FEL is it better done and to the side like JD or up on the right lke Kubota?

Also what about resale value of MF vs any other?

and one more, just to be silly do any of you wax your tractors? or is that just for the ones who have too much time on their hands?

For a farm tractor, I think the 1500 series is pretty well laid out and comfortable. The levers and loader joystick are in the right spots, regardless of where they are on the Blue or Green tractors.

Resale? On a tractor? I've never really thought about it. Tractors are lifetime purchases, my friend. Make the right choice and you never have to worry about resale. I think your Grandpa would agree. :)

I like to hose down my 1540 every once in a while to clean off the dust. It sure is a handsome piece of machinery.

I'm new to the Massey world, but have found the layout to be comfortable so far. I put a lot more hours on my last green tractor and liked that one, too.

It does seem that the FEL and BH attach and detach easier on the MF than on my JD, but that could be because of the age difference too. You didn't mention a BH, but a neighbor of mine who has an orange tractor has a lot more of an ordeal taking off his BH and putting on the 3PH. On my Massey, I can make the switch in a couple of minutes, or less. Very convenient.

I rarely wax my car or motorcycle, so I don't see myself every doing that to my tractor. However, I do now park the car outside so the tractor can have the spot in the garage. The car is a nice one and cost me a lot more than the tractor, but it's 'just a car' and the tractor is, *a tractor*! (big difference IMHO)

I'm still wrestling with what I will do this winter. I'd prefer to have everything under cover and will build another garage after I've done more clearing work, but that may not happen until next year. I've thought about those portable garages, but they seem to cost a lot for something that I may only use for a year, or two. Dunno, still struggling with that one....

I do hose it off every once and a while, because it does look nice when it is all red and shiney. :D

Good luck!

Wax, at least 3 times a year on the 5435. Just too nice a tractor to let it go to crap. People look at me funny when I say that but, the 165's we use are almost twice as old as I am and still reliable. I believe if youo take care of your equipment it will take care of you. Maybe wax is a little over the edge, 10 min, easy enough and keeps it looking new.

Resale, hard to say. How are the MF dealers in your area? If they aren't good your local resale will suffer. However, being a well recognized brand with huge dealer support around the world, you should get good return, if you need to sell it. They have been around a long time, people aren't worried about getting parts in 30 years.

Operator's platform is more of a personal thing. I like them, roomy & well set out. They have some nice features also.
