Can air in the intake line burn up the pump? I know it should be spelled "HYDRAULICS" but......

If there is not enough fluid in the supply line, then you certainly can burn up the pump.

The pump needs fluid for lubrication, plus it has the job of pumping.

It has PLENTY of hydraulic oil. My pump died and was wondering it air entry was the cause. I now have it replaced and examining the drive shaft, it was broken. So air was not the cause in the first place. Thanks JJ. I appreciate you input. Jules in Central Florida

A broken shaft may be an indication of a deadhead situation, where the pump stopped turning because there was no place for the fluid to go, with the engine still running.

It could have burst the pump or valve due to incorrect hookup.

cavitation could snap the shaft, because it could give big hyd spicks. If pump is cavitating and get a shot of oil it could give you a spick more the system relief valve can handle. Doing it a number of times and the shaft could snap. Kind of like poping your clutch over and over at high rpm sooner or later something snaps.
