My 4wd does not seem to be doing alot.
When I engage it the front wheels move fractionally, also when off the ground (power down loader) the front wheels rotate.
When traversing rough terrain the front wheels do not seem to assist. Back wheels will spin but front are stationary.

when in 4WD front and rear should both spin. if not then there must be a problem linking the front. sounds like the front wd is not actually engaging.

I am assuming something is happening as the wheels do engage, I can see them move fractionally, when tractor stationary, when I flick the switch. Also, to elaborate on initial post, if I power down with loader and lift fronts of ground they rotate whilst rear dont.

Wolseley,
Is this one of the John Deere hydraulic front wheel assist models with no mechanical drive to front?

If yes I suspect that you will have to perform some trouble shooting diagnostic work.

Do you have a service manual for this tractor?

I have never seen a circuit for the drive system but suspect there is a valve or valves that are shifted when you engage the front drive system. I would double to check to make sure that you power going to the valves being shifted when you engage the front assist. Also make sure that all of the electrical connections are clean and tight.

From there you will have to have a service manual to start troubleshooting further. I.e. where to take pressure readings, etc.

good luck

It is hydraulic front wheel drive, valves, solenoids, pressure switches, hydraulic motors at each wheel. Complicated system.

That was my concern also. My sons X749 is full time 4x4 and that circuit is complex enough.
