I have a Mahindra 2615 HST 4wd with fel. Today while working on my land, a limb struck the underside of the tractor and caused my transmission line to start leaking at a rubber hose connection. I got the tractor back to the shop in short order with very little fluid loss. However by the time I fixed the leak, I lhad ost a good bit of transmission fluid so I went ahead and drained the entire system. Unfortunately transmission fluid was all over the place under the tractor. Therefore, I cranked the tractor for about 20 seconds in an attempt to simply move it forward about 3 feet not knowing if there would be enough fluid left in the system to do this. When I pushed the reverse pedal nothing happened but when I pushed the forward pedal I heard a grinding noise and the tractor did not move. I immediately turned the tractor off. Again all of this took place in about 20 seconds. Did I do any harm to my transmission?

Grinding noises are almost never good. Have you refilled the system and tried it?

Are you sure it wasn't more of a groan.
Pumps can make some pretty loud noises if air is being picked up with the oil going through them, and it is hard on the pump to. But you should not have been able to do any damage that quick.
I would jhope the manufacturer has allowed for this as sooner or later any machine is bound to have a leak and run low on oil.
Being that the oil drives the tractor, when its low it just should not move. Just don't continue this practice.

thanks for the response. It was more of a groan. I talked to a couple of local tractor guys and they both told me that I simply heard the pump trying to operate. They told me the same thing y'all said: fill it up and I should have no problems which I don't.

Yep.. you may have heard the beginnings of cavitation. Not good inthe long run.. but I doubt anything grenaded as soon as you heard the groan.. etc. cavitation damage starts small then snowballs..
