One of my friends has a Hypertherm Plasma that he bought new a few years ago and used in his welding shop. He bought a new larger one for bigger jobs. He Ive used the machine and really like it, it cuts 3/4 well. He even gauranteed it and I trush him as he does alot of our work. Does anyone here have or use a Hypertherm plasma.

I own an older 3/8" machine, but have operated the larger capacity machines also. They're a quality manufacturer with high standards. Which model does your friend have to sell?

I've been laid off all winter, so I don't remember the model right off hand, but we have a hypertherm at work. A 2200 seems to come to mind. Its a 220v three phqse unit. Anyway, I hate the thing. It's been sent in for repair twice, and now has the same problem for a third time. It is very possible that we got a bad unit, and I don't want to talk you out of this one, but ours has been junk. The last thing we tried was cutting the frog off a Cat 980 loader. It cut about 6" and was done. To get by we picked up a 220v Harbor Freight unit, and were able to cut the last 9'.
My experience has only been with the one hypertherm machine, so very limited. If yours is the right price, I would say go for it. I'm sure your buddy will take care of ya, and has been using that very machine for a while.

It is rare to hear someone complain about a Hypertherm.

Was it sent to Hypertherm for repair or someplace local?

I think I just actually heard bubbles popping..

Hypertherm has been producing plasma systems since 1968.....have had hundreds of different models over the years. Parts and free tech support are available for all of them. If I knew the model....I'd be happy to help out!

There currently are 13 different plasma's in the product line that start at 30 amps and go to 800 amps.

We never had a model called a "2200".....is it hand held or mechanized?

If you can get the model number or post a picture...I'll tell you all about it! You can get operators and service manual online on the hypertherm website....click on the download library tab.

I think its a 1000 model. He had one minor problem and sent it back and they repaired it. He builds our 40 yard dumpsters at work. He has upgraded to a 1200 I believe. He takes care of all of his machinery. I also trust him as I dont think he would risk putting a junker on me as I keep him in alot of work.

I remember as a little kid in the mid eighties dad brought home a Plasma rig on a tandem trailer that had a V8 Cat genset on it. The max cut on it was 3/4 now they make them that weigh 60 pounds and can cut double that.

First plasma I ever used was around 1974 in a Shell Oil refinery. I was cutting 8-inch dia. circles in 3/4-inch stainless steel plate. For the life of me I can not remember anything about the plasma it's self. I do remember how little effort it took to cut that thick of stainless tho.

The Powermax 1000 is a great unit....it was in production for 8 or 9 years.....and there are probably close to 40,000 of them in the field. They will be supported for many years for free phone service and for torch consumables as well as repair parts.

The 1000 will edge start and cut about 1-1/4" .....and does a great job on materials from gauge to 5/8" at production speed. It has multiple voltage input....will run on any input voltage from 200 volts to 600 volts, single or three phase.

If you have any questions or need further info....feel free to email me directly: jim.colt@hypertherm.com
