Not sure if this would be better in hydraulics or build it yourself so I'm putting it in both. I was looking at the Toro Dingo (Toro | Compact Utility Loaders, Dingo Compact Utility Vehicles ) and noticed that they run up to a 36" auger with only a 24HP Diesel. Most of the PTO augers that my 34HP Kubota can handle only go up to 18". Is there that much of a difference between hydo run augers and PTO ones. I'd think if I turn down my auger to 54RMP like the dingo I'd be able to use their 36" auger. I know I'd have to beef up the mounting system for my auger but if I add a second gear box to get the 540 to 54 RPM would it work? Not that I'm drilling a lot of 36" holes but looks like a great way to dig holes to plant trees/shrubs

I just dug 22 holes with my 36" bit on my Toolcat yesterday. Planted balled an burlapped trees. Soil is little wet with mix of black dirt and clay. I have both a Bobcat 15C and 30C models. The 15C is medium torque and 30C is high torque. (Bobcat 10C is rated for use on CUTs) Was digging holes just over 2 feet deep. My 15C will not even run the big 36" bit well in anything but sandy or loose soil. My 15C is rated up to a 36" bit but I cannot use it in my soils, except in shallow holes. The 15C handles a 24" bit ok on the Toolcat. The 30C is designed for hard, tough, all day digging through hardpan, frost,or asphalt. Even my 30C struggled a little in wet clay and 36" bit. Probably because the clay would stick in the auger and not come out well. The 30C has 3780 ft-lb and the 15C has 1950 ft-lbs of torque. My 30C will turn about 53-54 rpm at 21 gpm. Both the TC and Dingo have 3000 psi, with the TC at 21 gpm (28gpm hi flow) and the Dingo at 13.8 gpm.

The bigger bits can turn slower due to their size, but I would not want to run my 36" bit any slower than 40 rpm. I would be leary about running a 36" bit on a Dingo. Might be able to do it in good conditions but in wetter soil it could have problems.

My prior CUTS, Kubota 3710, JD 3720 could handle 9-12" bits well but turned slow due to slower flow rates. Neither could handle my 24" bits. PSI just isn't enough.

You would increase the torque about 10 times. Now, if your break away bolt doesn't break, it should dig just fine.

Is this the kind of auger you are using?

J_J, I'm just looking right now. They go for $2800 new on EBay, and $400 used. It maybe cheaper to rent one for a weekend once in awhile when I need it. Right now I'm in the planning phase though. Planting trees this fall.

Something to consider with augering. A big advantage to most of the hydraulic operated augers have over PTO driven, is (in most cases) the ability to reverse the direction. If you get into a root or hard shale, you can reverse it and back it out. With a big drill on a PTO you may get it drilled in and not be able to get it back out. (this has happened to me, and it's a real pain) A bigger drill = more opportunity for this to happen. My $0.02
