Mahindra 5500
I have a 5500 that was purchased about a year and a half ago, it has about 166 hours on it now. At low rpms the steering does not work. If you have the motor revved above 1500 or so its fine. I had the pump pulled apart and you can see the galling in the aluminum housing. So..... New pump it is. The first price I was qouated I could make 4 payments with. The next I could make 2 payments. And my final qoute is from Bill's Tractors in San Anto and who I will forever do business with from now on- Less than one monthly payment. We're gonna try to reassmble the pump as is and just run a slightly heavier oil in it, maybe a 30 weight. It was done on trucks and tractors for many years with no harm so what can it hurt, the pumps already screwed.

Just so others will know- The pump is in tandam with the hydralic pump. They make you buy both halves.

I had problems with my hydraulics at about 2 years old and it was covered under warranty even though the dealer said I contributed to the problem.

Its in no way covered by the warrenty.

The oil trick worked. I just drove it the mile and a half home and its working great. It has just the slightest bit of hesitation at 600 rpms but at 800 works great and I usually don't drop it to 600 unless its gonna sit and idle while I'm off it. I can't reccomend for anyone to do this but it worked for me, and was cheap.

Kenneth, I think I have the same pump setup on my 575 DI. Did you pull the pump yourself ? I thought Bill's offered a rebuild kit for about $65 ? I am needing to get mine fixed as well. I keep losing power steering fluid with no sign of a external leak. I figure it must be leaking in the internal of the pump. I have also had issues with the hydraulic side of the tandem pump as well in the past. Now the loader operates slow and has lost about 50% lifting capacity. I looked into get a new pump also and I had to be helped up off the floor when they gave me the price. I was think I could buy the kit from Bill's and take it and the pump to a local hydraulic shop to pump rebuilt.

Wow, what a bummer.... sounds like there is a common thread to pump wear for Mahindra here.

So you have a messed up pump at less than 200hrs that you did nothing to mess up and its not covered under warranty and you still feel good about Mahindra? What a nice customer you are. Glad the oil trick worked, but that is beside the point.

Texasjohn, I cant say my problem has any reflection towards Mahindra in a bad way. My tractor is a 1994 model that has had ruff life. I am the third owner. I have about 2500 hours on it so i feel it may have been time.

I have an '05 5500 4WD that developed a "growl" when in 4WD at around 28 hours. Took it in to the dealer twice and they were never able to figure out the problem...
