I am having a small piece of land and together with my wife, we grow all kind of food. As we are getting a little older, we can imagine that a tractor could be helpful. So we ware looking around. It will be a small one though.

:welcome:
To TBN Peter. You came to the right place as we love to spend other people's money.

Your profile doesn't list where you are located so we will have to ask so that we can know what kind of ground and the climate you have.

Also what are you raising?

Your location should be part of your T-B-N PROFILE. (Central Idaho, Southern Maine, Texas Panhandle.) Location informs us of your altitude, soil and climate.

How much land are you farming? Same for the future or will area increase with a tractor?

Are you growing commercially i.e. selling your output, or do you have a kitchen garden?

Have you considered two-wheeled tractors?

I have gardened, i won't say farmed, with a shovel/fork, front tine tiller, rear tine tiller and way way back a cub cadet with a rear tiller. I now have a 35hp kioto and disks (among other implements).

The EASIEST by FAR was a rear tine tiller (5hp) It was reverse rotation..no idea if that made it easier or not. Borrowed it for this year and WOW - i'm buying one!! I didn't even break a sweat and some of the tillage was sod, some old garden. I can find used ones (in teh spring..shoulda bought then) for $200..now i see them for $400 (and fewer of htem).

I did 1/4 acre , 3 times over, in less than an hour. Unless you're doing multiple acres I can't see spending 1000-2k ofr one that fits a tractor.

Mnay of the market gardeners use 'two wheel tractors' and I'm considering that as well - again, unless you have ACREA a 'tractor' is pretty darned big and unwieldy.

I've disked up stuff with my kioti and it takes multiple passes and doesn't seem to go as deep as a tiller. For say, 2 acres of corn or something it would be great though. I used it mostly to fill in 'dead furrows' in my horse pasture.

I see gravely's now and then for a nice price...tempted to get one, have to investigate their tiller options.

It is NOT Necessary to disclose your location. The busy location police simply have an over-developed sense of curiosity. NO impact upon replies.

But it sure helps. For one thing he probably is not too concerned with snow removal.

I am living in Thailand and here, the dozer as an attachment is very popular. On the other hand, you hardly see front loaders as an attachment. Though I think that a loader is much more useful as it can be used for many things. As we only have a small piece of land we are looking for a compact tractor. We saw a nice one of 21 hp. But for this size, there are no loader attachments here. The smallest with a loader attachment is 32 hp. An option would be to get a small tractor and find another brand for a loader. But that isn't that easy here? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Peter

It would also help if you told us what a "small piece" is. To some here a "small piece" is a quarter-section, or 160 acres. I imagine in the OP's case it might be a hectare or less.

Adding a loader to a small 4 wheel tractor is doable but expensive for the added utility. I've a loader on my B7610 and appreciate it, but it only lifts like 700 lbs.

My grandfather cared for 30 acres in Vermont with a 2 wheeled Gravely. Hauled logs, plowed, tilled, rototilled, brushcut and made do. No loader. For lifting heavy things he had me :)

Reads like you may need a "compact utility loader"

At the risk of being flamed by majorwager - what are your planned uses?

eplegrand,

Welcome and thank you for telling us where you live. For one thing it tells us that your area probably has those cool two wheeled tractors with the headlight in the middle. I've seen them for years in videos from Asia and always wanted one.

My first motorized tractor was a two wheeler and in my opinion it didn't get much traction. When my wheels spun I thought about how nice it would have been to have been sitting above above those wheels. Wheel slip or not, I still think those tractors are cool.

There should also be an abundance of used rice tractors in your part of the world. I believe they are imported over here and called gray market tractors. If you consider one of those please check out the width of the wheel base as compared to that of general purpose utility tractors. A wider wheelbase should be less likely to tip over and cause bodily harm or worse.

Happy farming,
Stuck
