As many of you know from the 'Should I buy a tiller?' thread I'd been vascillating on this for a week or so. Yesterday I pulled the trigger and bought it. The dealer still gave me the 10% off on it even though technically I didn't buy it with another implement. He'd offered me 10% off on a rotary mower and tiller package last week but I opted for the mower alone. I thought he was certainly being more than fair in still extending the discount on the tiller. The bottom line is that my vascillation only 'penalized' me $55 and, quite frankly, I feel $55 better about the purchase now than I would have last week. Given the closeness of the purchases the dealer went what I thought was the extra mile, too. He told me he'd give me 10% off my next equipment, parts or service tab whenever I choose to use it in the coming year.
I was impressed on a couple of levels. Obviously I liked getting the discount to use and was impressed with that. What impressed me more than that was the way he found a way to further ingratiate and solidify me as a customer while still effectively standing by his word that the discount on the mower came only with the purchase of the additional implement with it. Truly a narrow line to walk with wanting to do something for a customer and still do what you said you'd do. I was thoroughly impressed with the business and customer service acumen in this.
