All I can say is watch out for the Hornets nests!

I was running the bush hog and the ROPS hit a brach that contained a very LARGE hornets nest that I obviously did not see. As they erupted out of thier nest...the air assault was on. By the time I realized what happened, I had already been stung 5-6 times. So instinct was to jump off and run..so thats what I did. However that is when the real problem began. Since my TC is hydro, I knew it would stop as soon as I let off the pedal so I was'nt concerned with the tractor running away. But when I hit the ground running, I felt a "pop" in my right leg and fell to the ground. Fortunately the hornets stayed and molested the tractor for a while and left me alone. Unfortunately, I tore my achilles tendon (which is the tendon that connects calf muscle to back of heel) and go for surgery next week and will be off work for 8 weeks!

I guess this would be a good time for my step-son and wife to learn some tractoring, as things still need to be done.

So FYI, be careful out there!

Oh man that hurt just reading about it. Good luck with the surgery, its routine, but that statement doesn't make your pain go away! The good thing about this accident is that if your wife learns how to tractor then you can justify buying ANOTHER tractor /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm with Bob as I feel the pain just reading your story. This is one of those unfortunate accidents that will most likely nag you for some time to come after the surgery. Hoping for a speedy recovery on your end.

Really sorry to hear you had to go through that. I hope the surgery goes well and you heal quickly. However, it may take some time to heal. Believe me, I've been through enough surgeries and ignored the Dr.'s advise on re-coup time to have leaned some things can't be rushed.

I hope your wife and/or daughter can "safely" learn to run the tractor while you're recouperating. Have they read the manual(s) yet? Just remember NOT to sit on the porch and yell out "You missed a spot". /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Good luck,

Tom

I once worked with a guy that tore his. He was out of work for many months and put on light duty for awhile when he returned. DO what the doctor(s) tell you! Hope you heal up quickly and best wishes.

I can relate to this post on two counts.

I tore my Achilles tendon many years ago playing tennis. It didn't completely detach but most of it was rolled up in a bunch at the base of my calf muscle. It was one of those, "will we operate or not" things. I opted to try the phsio first and it took weeks/months to get it fixed, surgery would have probably been quicker. Of all the bangs, breaks, dislocations and cuts I have experienced in my life, that Achilles tendon was one of the most painful. It still "shortens" up in cold weather and needs to be worked/warmed to loosen it up but no pain though. You have my sympathy.

On the second count, I got stung yesterday. I was backing in to some really thick, overgrown brush. Luckily I was looking over my shoulder and saw these black, chubby bees come piling out of the brush. Now, I've been chased before by wasps/ bees, so I immediately took off, followed by the black horde. I was stung twice but it wasn't too bad and they didn't follow me too far, probably about 50 yards, but it was one rough ride at the speed I was going.

So, take your time and follow doctor's advice as far as recovery is concerned. Let the family pick up some of the slack while you are out of action. You never know, they might enjoy it.

Thanks for all of the kind words, I'm sure things will work out fine. Looking forward already to get back to work though....guess I'm going to go nuts sitting around here. I suppose I'll be on here much more than usual.
Anyways, showed my step-son today how to hook up the FEL and some of the 3ph equipment....we did not get to the backhoe because I don't see any need for him to be using that!

I've had some close calls and the occasional single sting.

I keep but spray next to me in the tractor, and when I see somehting comeing, I start spraying myself while driving away as fast as possible.

I don't know if the bug spray will work if they really want me or not. It just might be luck that I haven't been hit worse, or luck that I've gotten far enough away to avoid the main attack.

Either way, I feel better having the spray close by for comfort.

Sorry to hear about your injury. At least you had a good reason for the injury. Just imagine if you did it getting down to take a break or something similar. If it's gonna happen, it usually will.

Good luck with the surgery and a speedy recovery!!!

I too have a thread on here about hornets. I was able to drive the bota away from them and get them out of my hair (what there is of it). I got 2 or 3 stings, but got the final laugh with hornet spray the next day.
