So title says what I fear. I was running right on the ragged edge of the temp gauge. Running hard doing some tilling on a fairly hot day and the temp would climb up near the red so I'd clutch in and let it cool a bit them get back to it. I noticed I was down on power and there was some smoke from the lower right side so I got off and saw some oil leaking down there. I figured out it was the vent tube with enough blow by to push out some oil with it. I loaded it up on the trailer and shut it down. When I got home it started up but rather begrudgingly, white puffs of smoke, hit, hit, hit, and then it lit off and smoothed out a bit and the white smoke went away but them the blow by came back. Next day I tried it again and same thing.

Are there tests I should do before I take anything apart? Should I just tear into it and check the head gasket and/or head? What is most likely to have been damaged?

TIA,
Bryan

Welcome Bryan,

I know this is hindsight, but any diesel tractor, regardless of brand, has a cooling problem when it's continually operating at or near the red on the temperature gauge (or light).

There is currently a thread with a YM1700 where the gent has very similar problems and symptoms such as yours. I'm hoping for one of our TBN mechanical wizards to zero in on what exactly the problems and remedy IS.

Well after reading some of the other threads I see you are supposed to run around 30% antifreeze, I was probably running more after changing the hoses and putting in antifreeze myself at around 50/50 like you'd do in a car. How much difference is that going to make? I checked the screen in front of the radiator as when I am brush cutting it gets clogged up pretty easily but it was clear. Very dusty conditions this day so I don't know if dust can collect in the fins where I couldn't see it.

Bryan,

Had similar problem a couple of weeks ago. Here are some things to check/try. loosen the oil drain plug and let a little oil out into a container.[plastic cup] if there is water in the oil it will come out first. If this is the case, replace the head gasket and make sure to torque the head bolts to specs and them recheck them after a few hours of running.

Make sure that your oil level is correct and not over full. this can lead to excessive blowby with oil coming out of the tube. I am not familiar with that particular model but some things are universal. Keep the screen in front of the radiator clean but also check the radiator fins itself. Take the screen off[ if it has one] and look thru the front grill of the tractor straight into the radiator fins and see if there is any blockage. Apparently, some grass seeds, pollen, and other assorted small stuff will go thru the screen and eventually clog the radiator resulting in over heating. This is what happened to me. I cleaned the screen several times while bush-hogging [after I replaced the head gasket] and the tractor still ran hot. I trailered the tractor home and upon inspection discovered that while the screen was clean, the radiator was about 70% clogged[no air flow]. A water hose solved the problem and I now check it often.
If you do replace the head gasket, have the head checked to see if it is warped as this is necessary for a good mating surface. The white smoke when starting could indicate oil in the combustion chamber. This could be caused by leaking valve stem seals which you could replace if you replace the head gasket. Could also be the rings which would allow oil in the combustion chamber and excessive blow by, but it would smoke continously.

I am not a mechanic and these are just possibilities. Hope none of this insulted your intelligence as I am just trying to help. Good luck.

John
