Generator I found an unused PTO generator

A lot of potential problems with this one- the first I consider (even little old ladies) is when someone won't let you test something before exchange of money.

Second ( i just went through this with a car) anything "alternator" based is a nightmare to troubleshoot after it ha been sitting. Very little dirt/corrosion etc on the brushes may not be visible- but may be the ultimate failure.

Although I probably would have done the same thing you did (and add it to the pile of "projects" I think your point of the extra $300. is worth the investment for the added security.

Curiosity- I wonder the value of the copper in the winding is worth more than she was seeling it for. In our area there has been a lot of thefts of ANY metal that can be quickly loaded into a truck.

...my humble opinions

my generator sat in the front of the garage, covered with a blanket to keep the dust off for the past 5 years.

when i got it moved out to the property 2 years ago, and having experience the frequent power outages, i went about getting it running again.

Rebuilt the carb about a year ago and ran it for about 30 min running 1Kw of lights (those large floodlights)

Ran it dry that way. THe last big storm took out power and finnally got it hooked up to backfeed my pannel. Ran about 1/3 the house, and we watched a movie on the home theater to kill time before bed.

so sat for 5 years, and fired up and worked fine.

I do plan on running it more frequently now that its "setup" as we do loose power often for hrs on end.

dont think so...., just a cheep Colman 5Kw i bought when i was building fences back in the late 90's (commming up on 10 years old now that i think about it) and needed something to run the compressor and saws on rural/new construction houses.

My little ole Coleman 4Kw has been purring almost non stop since Monday evening. Bought it from Walmart in mid 1989 after a late ice storm put us down for almost 6 days, at first it was cold and all was fine till the temp started up by late in day 4, finally got generator borrowed and running about 3 hours before the REA got us back on. It has been a very dependable unit for 19 years. However, in this heat we find we will need something bigger to run even window units, so I am looking. Thinking about a pto unit to run at night when the A/C is needed.
