A lot of potential problems with this one- the first I consider (even little old ladies) is when someone won't let you test something before exchange of money.
Second ( i just went through this with a car) anything "alternator" based is a nightmare to troubleshoot after it ha been sitting. Very little dirt/corrosion etc on the brushes may not be visible- but may be the ultimate failure.
Although I probably would have done the same thing you did (and add it to the pile of "projects" I think your point of the extra $300. is worth the investment for the added security.
Curiosity- I wonder the value of the copper in the winding is worth more than she was seeling it for. In our area there has been a lot of thefts of ANY metal that can be quickly loaded into a truck.
