This is what the tire guys at work use.

Wanna see something funny, pop open one of these on a unsuspecting victim.

when i did tires in a shop we used a ring made of alum. the ring was lined with thin foam, it was @ 6 inches deep and the size of the rim. wet it down push it over the rim against the tire and use the chuck to fill er up... works every time.. jon

I always use a ratchet strap to seat small tires. It is a fine line between not tight enough and too tight, but I usually get it within a couple of tries. Wide tires like a riding lawn mower are much easier than narrow ones like a wheelbarrow. I haven't been brave enough to spray ether and light it in a tire. I guess just call me chicken :D

I bet that was quite a boom if it blew the bead past the rim  Glad you're ok.

I've pretty much never had the strap trick fail.. though I have seen gasolene shoot a rim/center 40' into the air and leave a worthless smoking tire carcass on the ground...

I wonder what explosive chemicals people are using to set tire beads.

Not to 'hijack' but I just picked up a (older) book "Old Tractors, and The Men Who Love Them" by Roger Welsch. He's quite a humorous writer along the lines of Patrick McMannus' who writes Hunting/Fishing stories. Roger discussed the Red-Neck Ether tire mounting method, that I'd never heard about. (maybe that's a good thing!) Low and behold, here's the method on TBN! ~Scotty
