I live in an area with 3 huge tire plants and a friend is one of their techs, One of the rubber reps was over at the restaurant with us when he told me,. our family owned the land a tire retreading facility is on also, I brought it up to the owner, and he heard the same and also, he heard that a good bath and sit for a while with vinegar will pull a lot of the smell out of them..

I am not sure, but I think carbon black is made from bituminous coal. I seem to recall a plant that produces carbon black on the Big Sandy River between Fort Gay and Kenova, WV where coal is processed into other such more refined things.

Maybe the odor you guys are mentioning is what I smelled when looking at Mahindra tractors two years ago. It smelled like a stinky athletic shoe that had been burned and the tires had an odd grey appearance to them and looked like they were really cheaply made; like recycled plastic instead of quality rubber and synthetic rubber compound. I have not shopped at a Mahindra since, if they cut corners on tires, what else if substandard. Don't tell me all the tires are gonna be like this!
