It's weird that the manual for my BX25 mentions the FEL float position but doesn't explain it. I found a video on youtube that showed me how to put it in float. Then I tired it out, and it worked. To get it to float over uneven terrain, should I rollback the bucket just slightly or keep it level? When I tried it out it just dug into the ground.

There is an old joke and I mean OLD. "How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice practice.

I have three different loaders and they all work best in a little different way.

"Best" is going to depend on a lot of variables, but mostly what material you are using and bucket angle. You will just have to experiment, but you will "generally" float better with a slight angle as opposed to flat. Changes in angle whether pushing or pulling will change how much material is moved or how smooth the finish will be. I am still learning on my newest tractor.

Not usually applicable when going forward unless you roll the bucket back. Backing up and using it in conjunction with various bucket angles it works well for light grading and
smoothing. Back dragging.

Rare case that I've used mine in forward but have a few times. Usually used backing up and the angle of the bucket depends on ground surface and what outcome I'm trying to achieve. I often times load the bucket to max then back drag for more weight down pressure when needed.

I guess I am in the minority in that I use float going forward quite a bit; used it yesterday spreading 2" crushed rock in a washout; also use it clearing snow.

I have used float in the forward direction when using the FEL moving snow. Other than that its a back drag function.

You guys are the best. This post hasn't been up for more than an hour and I got four (make that five) very good, very helpful responses. Thanks very much.

"Back dragging" sure is a lot easier, but with my gullies/ditches/precipices, going backwards is simply not possible.

I have the same issues here in WV and you better pay attention to where you are going backward or forward. I always wear my seat belt. Around here you are either on a hill or about to be on a hill.:D

I am not sure my "hills" here would really qualify as a hill in WV, but they are enough for me. I grew up as a "flat land farmer", but we bought a couple of hill farms in the late eighties when my father in law retired and it sure was an adjustment. I doubt that I will live long enough to master it.
