Roy called this right!!!

Talk about getting the shaft, and not the propeller shaft! Last week I checked the King Kutter web site for local dealers because I was looking specifically for a 48 Brush Hog and a local reputable tractor Company here in NH was listed as a close dealer. Calling that number I instead reached a small used tractor equipment dealer in Londonderry NH who had their old telephone number. Inquiring about the KK brand, he went out to his lot he stated that he had a new 4 ft KK that he would sell me for $750.00. This sounded like what I was looking for. I decided to load the trailer and make the 50 mile pilgrimage in the pouring rain to check this out. On arrival, we went out to his yard (literally more like a junk yard) where he showed me a KK that had been sitting there for a lengthy period of time, there was rust on it and it was covered with leaves, however, it also had all the mounting hardware, prop shaft ect. wired to the body for assembly and the fluid @ oil and grease had never been added because of shipping, I figured it being Old/new it was probably still a good price and paid him cash for it. We loaded it on the trailer with his tractor in the rain storm and I went home.
On arrival at home I pulled a manual as well as a cut sheet from the Mfgr. Website and checked the model number with those on the chassis of the mower. Well! right on the tag it said 40 inch rotary cutter as well as the model number that matched to a 40 and not a 48 on the web site. I was upset for not checking the numbers before hand. Being a trusting person I took this person at his word. I immediately called him and he told me that he had measured it and it was 48? I measured it and found that side to side of the chassis and informed him that it was 441/4?
Over the course of the week, I called him a couple of times and suggested that I bring it back and look at two others he had. He was adamant that a 40 rotary cutter was considered a 4 footer. I begged to differ and called King Kutter Co. who confirmed what I knew to be true. They advised me that if the unit had sat around without fluids as this one, as well as the others the guy wanted me to look at, then there was a good chance of dried out seals and bearings.
I was pretty sure that I was going to just return this and buy new from a reputable dealer. I returned to his yard this past week, and prior to unloading my trailer he showed me the two other cutters of different make. They, being in the same condition as the one I had purchased were of no interest to me. I told the man I was dealing with, that I was instead going to buy a new one someplace else. He was again defensive, and stated that the one he had sold me was a 4 foot cutter. Here is the real kicker; he told me he was going to charge me $100.00 for his time and handling. Arguing about this ( while knowing I still had to get the unit off my trailer) I reluctantly negotiated him to $50.00 and left. This person evidently has no idea what this act will cost him. Yes, I should have more careful, even in the torrential rain and resolved it then. Lesson Learned!
The reputable tractor company will be notified that their old number is still listed by King Kutter, and this other company in NH is using it to scam people to buy his junk.

I would look for something other than king cutter. I have a 5 ft. 1 year old leaking over the winter, needs a bushing I guess, went to T.S. they called K.C. they said it happens a lot wanted $15 for bushing.
THESE THINGS ARE MADE IN CHINA, stay away. JMO

Hiya,

I think I have talked to that "dealer" several times. He's got a "showroom" in the front yard and a junkyard in the back behind the fence? Never bought anything off of him as his prices are insane for what the stuff is.

The "local reputable dealer" you mention had a number of small branch shops around the southern part of the state about 5 years ago, most of these were shops that didn't stock any tractors or implements, just lawn equipment and such but they would take your info and have one of the people from the 2 main stores follow up or if you needed a part, it could be ordered there and delivered in a few hours. I assume the "dealer" you ran into managed to take over that phone # when the other dealer closed the Londonderry branch.

I think you are lucky to have lost just $50. Things could have turned out so much worse. Good luck hunting for a "real" 48" cutter it will be the one that measures 36 inches.

Tom:
This guy actually added a (&) between the name of the reputable business, which is actually the initials of father and son it appears but from what I understand he use to sell KK, and they just haven't removed his number from the WEB. I made a couple of calls yesterday so that should change.

I agree, loss of $50 is better than being stuck with the wrong size OLD machine at a NEW price. That's not counting your time, fuel and agravation: mad: You are very lucky he did not show you a "no returns" sign on the back side of the junkyard fence and leave you with a loaded trailer.

Wow. Everyone is saying you got lucky he took it back.

I feel the total opposite. I feel you should have gotten a FULL refund, including your $50.

A few terms come to mind here. "bait and switch" and "false advertisement"

You called him. He said he had a 48" cutter to sell you. You show up and there is NO 48" cutter. Instead he sells you a 40" cutter, telling you the whole time that it is a 48", and you didnt realize it until home.

Sometimes model numbers are hard to decipher and unless it says on it, or you take your own tape, it is difficult to tell. He is a place of business, he should have known what it was. I have looked at used equipment before like blades and bushhogs, and the owners arent even sure what it is. About a year ago I called on a c-list ad for a 6' blade. Went, saw, liked, bought. I didnt realize it was even a 7'er until it wouldnt fit in my 6'6" bed:confused2:

Since he is a business, it is HIS responsibility to know what he is selling.

Just curious, did your reciept or paperwork make any mention of 4' or 48" on it anywhere?????

I gave him cash! Sometimes a business person (puke) appreciates that. I wish I had poked around a little bit closer and knew what to look for. I did get hold of King Kutterin Alabama, and they promised to get his number off thier web site. I also found out that I would have had trouble fitting it to my I match. Things happened for a reason!!
I ended going to Maine Tractors today and bought the XB version, and enjoyed doing business with them. It is a Husband & Wife operation in Scarborough. Very knowledgable and they make trips to the factory with thier own trailer to pick up stock. I highly recommend them. As for the other Jimock, I will make sure he appreciates that $50. I will provide the name of the company if you need via email.
