First let me say that my that my knowledge of hydraulics is limited to how to use a lever. We have a log splitter that sees a lot of use and it's caused me to wonder about a couple of thing.

1. How does the auto return stop? I saw a post here where a member built a bracket to limit the return stroke and I would like to do something similar.

2. Right now we have a horizontal shaft engine that the pump bolts to. We've had a lot of engine troubles this year and may have to replace it. If we put a vertical shaft engine on there would we have to change the pump? I already have 2 vertical shaft engines and it would be much cheaper to fab a mounting bracket for 1 of those than to buy a new engine.

I don't know what kind of pump is on there but I can take pictures after work if needed.

Thank you

The auto return to neutral works by using hydraulic kickout.

You can use a vertical shaft engine with a hyd pump.

I didn't think there would be a problem with changing the pump position but wasn't sure. Thank you for confirming that.

I'm trying to learn about hydraulics since I usually have to fix everything on the splitter. I've been wondering how to limit the return stroke, my dad runs it all the way to the top every time and I get tired of holding on to a big block of wood waiting for the wedge to come back down.

I'm assuming that the kickout has something to do with pressure or flow? If I put a c-clamp on the beam would that make it kick out?

There are cyl sleeve to add to the rod to limit return stroke.

You might get away with a collar of wood and a clamp o the rod.

Look at te bottom of the page for stroke limiter collars
