the hose is plenty long enough - how hard to cut the hose and reinstall the end coupler? it is a hose for my hydro snow blade. the plow hoses seem brittle /cracked so i will probably get the others replaces soon but i am hoping for something to get me back to plowing today if i need it. - every post or video I see just shows how to replace a hose - not repair

I've done it for a VERY temporary fix to get the machine back to the barn. The hose is tough to cut when old and typically spits when trying to insert the fitting. There is wire in it so I had to use a hacksaw to cut the old hose. I also had to use silicone gel to insert the fitting barb. I used two hose clamps 180 degrees apart and screwed as tight as I could get them without breaking. (Don't try that with foreign made clamps.)

When you replace it with a new hose, cover the new hose with sleeving.

you would need a hose press to press the new end onto the cut hose.

Really just better/easier to replace the whole hose in my opinion.

Messicks has an informative video about hoses on YouTube titled,

I haven't had any luck fixing high pressure hoses, and spraying hydraulic oil is very dangerous

My advice would be to just take the hose off, take it down to your local hydraulic shop & have him build a replacement. He will need the old hose plus your old ends to match the threads. Locally it is a one day turnaround, half the price of a factory hose, and clearly made of better quality material.

A lot of times the splits start with abrasion or sun damage. Better quality hydraulic installations have a nylon protective sleeve over the hydraulic hoses. You can buy nylon hydraulic hose protective sleeving (25 foot rolls) from Amazon for just over a dollar a foot. I've ordered a couple of rolls in 1" diameter (hope that's the right size) just so I'll have it on hand. Nylon cable ties are used hold the sleeve in place.

My plan is to put a sleeve on each hose as they are replaced over the years.
luck,
rScotty

Sound advice and buy a spare...........check Surplus Center;a lot cheaper than the local shops around me.

It looks like a hose press would cost about $275 on amazon- anyone have any experience on how hard of a job it is with this? all of the plows hoses look brittle. I would much rather buy a tool and spend a couple of hours fixing something then spend a couple hours driving around for someone else to do it. Plus I like tools lol

Where do you live? There is a lot more to it then what you are thinking. Hose to match fittings and a ton of fittings. Putting new fittings on old hose might not work to good other then short term.

I think you are mistaken. If it's the hose press I saw, that press it just to press the fitting into the new hose. It does not crimp. The crimp tool for hydraulic lines in typically in the range of $2,500 plus each die size. As I recall the last time I looked at getting into the work, the dies were about $275 EACH.

As I mentioned earlier, the fittings are very hard to install in new hose much less in old stiff hose. That's what the "hose press" is for.

Thank you - That is helpful. I wondered why no one does their own lol
