Is there a trailer out there that will drop the tong weight down to 4000 pounds from 7000? I'm very new to tractors and to trailers.

Thanks
Glen

I seriously doubt if your Toyota can handle either 4,000 or 7,000 pounds of tongue weight.... less than 500 probably is more like it. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Funny you ask. Yesterday I was having the same dilemma. Today I am not.

I HAD a 6 cylinder straight drive extended cab 2000 Tacoma and traded it on a 1997 Extended cab 7.3L powerstroke diesel. It already has a 100HP chip and I can turn the chip down and baby it and get the exact same fuel mileage I got with the Tacoma (around 22MPG).

The only thing I am out is the few extra cents per gallon for diesel. I made an even swap because my Tacoma was newer with fewer miles.

So I'm guessing this can't be done? I was hoping I could do something.

Thanks

As you are new, I'm guessing SkyPup was just giving your some good natured grief, but realize that towing capacity and tongue weight capacity are 2 different things.

The tongue weight is essentially the amount of DOWN force that is exerted on the trailer hitch. Most trucks cannot take a lot of tongue weight, which is why it is so important to center the load on the trailer so that it is balanced properly and not putting too much weight on the hitch.

As for the towing capacity of the Tachoma. I have no idea, but if Getut says he just got rid of his Tachoma to do essentially the same thing (and he has a smaller tractor than you do) then I'd suggest you are probably asking for some trouble?

Hey Getut, what was your set up before the trade? i.e. what size trailer, hitch,..... I need to transport a 2000lb CUT with a 99 Tacoma and am looking at options.
And given that all the $$$ went to buying the tractor, a trade isn't in the cards.

I did some quick research and here is what I found:

The CK30 weighs 3055lbs. The FEL for the CK30 is 770lb, and the hoe is 855lbs for a combined total of 4680lbs.

I don't know anything about your truck other than it is a Toyota Tacoma. I went to Toyota's website and got the following information.

This is based on a Toyota Tacoma extended cab with V6 and towing package.

Curb weight 4035lb

Standard towing capacity 3500lb
Max Towing capacity 6500lb

Gross Combined Weight Rating 8100.

Your tractor and truck could possibly weigh as much as 8715lbs! That doesn't include the weight of your trailer.

I don't think I would try it. Others opinions may differ.

There's a difference between what can be done and what should be done. I've pulled a MF135 with a bushhog on the back on a car trailer behind a Chevy S-10 pu (4.3 liter V-6 and it had electric brake hook-up). In hind sight I probably shouldn't have done it, but it did pull it. I found the problem was not pulling it, it was a matter of getting it stopped which involved dialing in the brakes on the trailer almost perfect. It would also depend on how far I was towing it. If you are towing it 20 miles once a year on relatively flat ground, that may not be so bad. If you are looking to take it 400 miles then you may have to look at some other options.

Well thats the thing. The trailer that my best friend and I built on weekends is WAAAAAY overbuilt. We used 2" x 10" rectangular tubing for the sides for example. I would always smoke my brakes on my truck just pulling the thing empty and had a hard time getting it rolling to boot.

I had the 6 cylinder with 5 speed manual and the stock Toyota Reese hitch. The trailer probably weighs 4000 lbs empty. My CK20 weighs 1900 something, add the loader and an implement or 2 and I would have probably been over 7000lbs being towed (not including the truck).

I always used to joke with my wife about her not being able to ride with me in the Tacoma... cuz with me and the dog the back bumper was already dragging. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thats a joke between my wife and I.. I am NOT really that heavy. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
