it just doesn't seem quite right. On an earlier post, I replaced the cylinder on my wood splitter. Now it works, splits wood full pressure... however, when the cylinder is in motion, forward or backward with or without a log, the input to valve gauge reads 2000 psi.
Is this normal? I thought It supposed to reach full pressure only when there is the resistance of the log. I hope I am wrong.
And another thing... I can not adjust the detent to stop when the cylinder is retracted. It goes back but it does not go in neutral. I have to kick it manually. I took the spring and the ball out, but I didn't notice anything unusual. Am I missing something?

Did you set the kick out pressure? Should be about 700 to 1100 psi. Your pressure should not be that high with the cyl not working against a log or returning. Perhaps it is binding on something. Are you using tractor hyd or gas engine/two stage pump? Low pressure on a two stage pump is about 650 psi, and high pressure about 2500 psi.

Is the gauge in the pressure line feeding the directional valve?

If yes what is the pressure when the cylinder is not moving. I.e. the valve is centered.

If it is still high you have some blockage in your valve.

If it is low you either have a cylinder binding issue like J.J. stated or some blockage in one of the cylinder ports.

Maybe a restricter in the line to slow the piston down?

My splitter has a stop that will kick out the valve handle to neutral upon return to home position.

Just so you do not start trouble shooting something that is not wrong......try another gauge to be on the safe side....your gauge could also be whats failing...

Hmm - thought it was elementary? If detent isnt working after hydraulic been worked on like the cylinder replaced, perhaps the oil reservior is sucking air and needs more fluid ? Air in lines can cause detent not to work. check the tank and add more as needed. Full Cycle the ram a few times before checking the detent operation.

Mine did that. It was not detenting on the return stroke, but was on the splitting stroke. I reversed my hoses on the QD's on the tractor and "fixed" the problem. I had them hooked up backwards.

Well... I screwed up! I retro checked all my steps after I installed the new cylinder and... I found the culprit. I had installed two new swivel connector I bought from the hydraulic store. These connectors actually were restrictors, which I didn't ask because I didn't even know these animals existed in the first place. I should have, however, spotted them during the installation. I didn't!
Well I now know what restrictors look like.
Anyway, after I replaced them with regular connectors, the splitter worked like it should. I get zero pressure during the no load cycles and when full pressure when loaded with a log and, the detent is kicking out when supposed to.
Thanks folks for all the invaluable suggestions. They all make good sense.

Somebody probably put the restricted fittings in the wrong bin. Can't say I never did that before.
