Hi

I am working on a Massey Ferguson 240 that has the Massey Ferguson 232 FEL on it. The FEL is not working. I found that the shaft driving the pump has an issue and I will be buying that tomorrow at the dealers.

My problem is this, I am noticing that on the exploded view that the filter is on the wrong side of the pump. So, I know nothing about hydraulic stuff. The way I see it is the fluid goes in one side of the pump and the fluid comes out the other side of the pump. Am I right in thinking that the fluid coming out of the pump is the high pressure side? Or is the whole system high pressure.

Any help would be appreciated. Does it matter what side of the pump the filter goes on?

Isn't that like saying air goes in one side of a fan and out the other? What? Did you expect it to stay inside? ;) I hope you don't mind me havin' some fun with that statement. I think I know what you meant, but the way your wrote it made me smile.

Filters are normally on the inlet side and are suction filters (not designed for high pressure). This is also true for hydraulic fluid coolers because very few of them can take 2500 psi without blowing up. On most hydraulic pumps I've seen, the suction side has a larger pipe than the outlet pressure side.

I guess it did sound fairly lame huh?

From everything you have said, the filter is on the correct side of the pump. The filter adaptar has "IN" marked on it where the hose connects to it. The side that goes into the pump has "OUT" marked on it. That side of the pump has a bigger hole in it as well. Thank you very much.

I would go on a limb here and say if it looks like a automotive spin on filter, it isn't going to take much pressure, making it a suction side. Now after saying that I have a skid loader that gives charge oil to hydro from a vane pump that puts it on the pressure side of the pump, but pressure is reduced down at that point it is basicly waste flow.
