Thanks for all of your help and the confirmation on the bridle. Since my friend left in June we haven't gotten to ride as much as we would like. Good point on using the same bridle he had used. This was another that he had in the garage. I hadn't thought about the ole boy being accustomed to one. Before he left he showed me how to saddle the horse but he had already put the bridle on so I missed that part of the lesson. I am comfortable around horses and they seem to be comfortable around us. They get feeding and brushing regularly. They recognize our John Deere Gator as "Meals on Wheels".

At first glance I thought Wow! You really have it too tight! His eyes are rolled back in his head! Then I realized that I was just seeing the reflection from the flash. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Brent,
As some others have said, the throat lach needs to be farily loose. You should be able to put 4 fingers side by side under there when it's adjusted correctly. The buckles on the cheek (side) straps should be adjusted so that there are 2-3 wrinkles at the corner of the mouth.

Also, I can't see well enough in the photo, but it doesn't look like there is a curb strap or chain on the bit. This is a leather or nylon strap or a chain with leather straps on the ends. It goes under the horses chin so that when you pull on the reins the bit pulls mostly down against the lower jaw.
