I need to add some weight to my 3pt harrow disc

I put in numerous food plots this year with my new tractor and disc and the plots are all doing pretty well. For my next plantings and my honeys garden I'd like to get deeper as all I could manage without weights on the disc was about 6" or so on average although in really fertile soil it pulled down to the axles.
I saw a post recently although I can't find it now where someone made weights out of concrete which seemed like a good fix for him but I'd like a little bit more flexability so I'm wondering if some type of tanks are available they need to be somewhere around 16" wide and 54" long to go across my disc frame nicely and I'll need 2 one for each side. Just wondering what others have come up with I'm thinking maybe used propane tanks or air tanks that I could fill with water but I'm sure there have got to be lots of folks out there using something please share what or how your weighting yours. Before anyone recommends using the family I've already asked my CEO and she gave me the look so I guess thats out. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well folks I know I haven't given ya'll much time to respond but my propane distributor just called and he's going to give me 2 of the tall tanks and although they aren't 54" long for free I'll make them work.

What about some 55 gal barrels? These are usually free for the taking. Check with your local car wash as they usually get their supplies in 55 gal plastic drums. A couple of tie down straps on each to hold to your disc frame, and your in business.

Plastic 55gal barrels are the ticket for me. I fill them with water instead of concrete for easye weight adjust though. I welded 2 half circle brackets and use small ratchet straps to secure. Also built 3pt carrier for barrel that serves as fel counterweight.

What about scraps of large diameter pipe. I'm sure you could find some short 4-6 foot pieces that would be mor eor less scrap / unuseable to a contractor.. slap ends on and drill a hole to add water.. strap to your disc.. etc.

55 gallon or 35 gallon drum sounds good to. Cheap.. etc.

I already had a 55 gal barrel, about 1/3 full of concrete, with 2 bolts out the top. It used to be a counterbalance for a fold over antenna pole. I bolted on an eye to pick it up with and set it on my disc. Then welded 3 short angle iron uprights to the disc, around the barrel to hold it in place.

Have not needed it on the disc but I have a full 55 gal barrel that I use for counter balance on the loader, which would sit there also.

What size are the cutters on your disk? If they are 14" in diameter 6" is about all the depth you are going to get. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I played with various options, such as barbell weights, PVC pipe filled with concrete, suitcase weights, etc. In the end I went low-tech and low-buck and added two logs, chained on for stability. Not the prettiest thing you ever saw, but it works much better now. All it took was two logs too crooked for the sawmill and a light chain I never used anyway.

I too have used logs and cinder blocks for additional weight. On one project where we were using the box-blade quite a bit we temporarily fastened the cast iron wheel weights to the box to help it cut better.
