All pets hold a special place in our hearts, and I am sorry for your loss JD.
I need to bury my oldest cat today....

My wife and I are also sorry for your loss. Makes me think of the "brood" we rescued many years ago while boarding our horses at a friends place. This black female stray was coming around and my wife got her trust. When she had a litter when we were leaving, we took momma and all six kittens because there were already resident cats and the friends did not want more.
We had all spayed and nuetered. We tryed to condition them to our new place but momma had other ideas and was the first to leave once loose. A fox or coyote got the smokey grey one. A dusky grey tiger bailed after I used welding gloves to hold her for worming. Left with three blacks and a white and grey, we got along until we sold and moved. Two of the black ones, always somewhat wild were never caught so we left them behind. The remaining black and the white and grey lived to around eleven or twelve and are buried at our current place. A former neighbor who took on the task of providing for the two left behind (but could never catch them) no longer sees them so we assume they have passed as well.
That brings us to our current place and mangerie'. A stray had three kittens in our barn. We caught and handled the kits young enough. Though we never thought it would happen, with some patient handling, momma came around and is my "garage cat". We also have a former tom that showed up. (Come around here and you get your #uts cut out, lol)
We have had others during this time that came to us in pretty rough shape and though we tried, did not make it. Those seem to be the ones that make it into your heart the most.
They almost always have a personality that makes them worthy so we enjoy them while we have them.
