I have a New Holland TC30... with the current implements, it weighs about 2800#'s. I need to take it on a 800 mile trip (round trip). I will probably make that trip twice in the next year.

I can get a single axle (3500#) trailer with electric brakes for $1200 (used) or a dual (total 7000#) axle without brakes (also used). Are either of these good choices... or should I wait until I can afford a dual axle w/brakes?

thanks for the advice.

...upon reading (this site is awsome!)... I think I will do the right thing.

2 axles & brakes!

Thanks for everyone that contributes to this site.

The single axle will not do the job. You must remember that the 3500# axle has to carry your tractor, the weight of the trailer, and any straps, chains, spare tire, ect. The 7000# is what you want. It will also give you the option to place the tractor on the trailer to get the right amount of tongue weight on your tow vehicle. By the way, make sure your tow rig is up to the task. What do you have for a truck? Also, where are you located at? We may be able to lead you to a trailer manufacture whos price is inline with a used trailer that you may have to dump $$$ into to get it up to snuff.

Dual axles with brakes.

The single would be enough (barely). But if you blow a tire, it's a hairy deal.

Smart Choice is
2 axles 4 whees 4 brakes!

Ditto! I have both trailers, one with 8 ft trailer single axle and one with 16ft trailer dual axle. I tend to prefer my bigger trailer for variety tasks including transporting my Kubota. Only time I use the small trailer when i know I'll be in the city and parking is a problem. With the 16fter I can use the WD bars and it makes all the difference in the world. One time I had a tire blowout on the little trailer when i was hauling dirt and it was scary!! No brakes and single axle!! At a time like that i wished i was using the 16fter with electric brake and it would have been a safer stop. :( Just something to think about down the road.;)
