I am looking at edgers to use on my sidewalks, driveways, and flower bed boundaries. I have looked at the B&D electric for $90. Weedeater 2/stroke gas for $129. Craftsman and others powered with lawnmower motors for $199 to $299. And a Husky stick edger on sale for $199. Boundaries for the beds will be a shallow trench. I have been told if you run an edger around your beds weekly that you can keep the grass out. Any advice on equipment and usage would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe I don't need one and am suffering, according to my wife, from "tool lust".

We bought our first house, an older one, in the Fall of 1968. And in the Spring of 1969 I rented an edger one day. I've never used one since. I just use my string trimmer and turn the head to do the job. If it's done regularly the string trimmer is almost as fast. If not, it takes a little longer but does just as good a job.

Years ago before string trimmers were so common, I had an electric edger from Sears. It had the metal blade and rolled on three wheels.

It worked great. I loved the way it cut down into the dirt along the walks and driveway giving me a nice clean line. Simple to use, very effective and fast.

But it died on me just after I bought my first string trimmer and now that's all I ever use. I've always wanted to get a nice edger and one day I'm sure I will. A dedicated edger does such a superior job of triming along concrete that it's almost worth it.

Of course, the string trimmer does a decent job and I have two of them already, so it's real easy to put off buying another edger. Especially since I'm in the country now and don't have anything to trim. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just food for thought....Have you considered a little Mantis garden bed cultivator with the edger attachment? I have the Stihl version and it works great and only wieghs in around 20 lbs or so. I like to use it in our flower beds and to cultivate around plants in the garden. I put on the edger attachment and edge around all the beds and sidewalks and it works great. I think I paid $269.00 for it last year. Mine also came with a set of rear wheels attached which makes the work a bit easier. Here is the one I have.

Another thing you might consider is one of the models with interchangeable heads for string trimming, edging, and even some other jobs. Stihl is only one of several manufacturers who make them.

One time I saw a coulter blade setup for a 3PH that you could use to edge along drives and curbs. Wish I could find it; think that would be a quick way to get some more seat time.

I wish I had bought a split boom when I got mine but I did not. If I buy one it will be used more for edging around flower beds and mulch (actually now lava rock) beds. I just don't know how well it will perform on this job.
