With the 14 cylinder version weighing in at 2300 tons I wonder if step 1 isn't "build engine in dry dock" /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That engine is a two stroke. It can run either direction so they probably shut it down and start it running the other direction for reverse.

There was a shrimp boat out of Bon Secour, AL that had a 2 stroke engine and that's how they reversed. They just shut it down and started it up reverse, Sure made it interesting when they got close to the dock /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif the hands were praying it would start first try. They've since (last year) changed it out for a Cat engine and a Grey Marine gear.

OK, but how big is the starter motor?? Hard to imagine even a big Cat or Cummins pony motor turning that thing over...

I\'ll bet they use compressed air to spin the motor

All they'd need is to plumb it into a cylinder and it would move the whole motor. No fuss, no muss.

If it were an electric starter, can you imagine the size of it! And the flywheel gear. WOW. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
