...I flicked a bee off my laptop's keyboard...

Then I wondered how fast my finger tip was moving when it struck the bee, which tumbled through the air about seven feet before hitting the ground...

I know a bull whip cracks because the tip exceeds the speed of sound...

How fast does a flicking finger move?

My guess is at least 60 mph. Don't know how to measure it though...

Anyone know, by chance?

Is this flicking finger anything like the fickle finger of fate because there's lots of times I'am starting to feel good and that one travels like lightning and thwack right to the back of the head. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Have you got a video camera? Set it up and shoot the finger flick.. (Pun not intended, is cool though)

NTSC video is 30 frames per second so you should be able to count the frames the tip of your finger covers in say one inch and do the math.

Ah yes.....them bee's. Last night I had a black wasp nail me in the arm. What I am wondering is how long does it take the brain to realize that you have been bit and then relay a message to my big mouth to utter some terrible word that my 2 year old will repeat when we are at church in line for communion!!! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Bill,

I really enjoy TBN with questions like this, it is so stimulating. Was the bee close to your nail or some distance away because the closer it is the less wind resistance The speed is depending on the position to your finger leaving the thumb. One other point was your flick into a head wind this will also impact on the speed and one last thing was you finger lubricated.
I think Junkman would be an expert in this field These very technical things are right up his ally. I'm Calling Junkman to give us his knowlege on this one (junkman not to technical though) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

this web page ...." came up with an
average "flick speed" at the end of my finger of about 4.8 meters per second (about 17 feet per second)." /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

...but he was working with an ant not a bee and and we can assume that the flick speed would increase proportionally to the anticipated pain of the sting.

It depends on whether it's a bee or a booger. Bee speed is fast, but I hear booger speed is tops. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
