Never store a motor tilted up. If water collects in the property hub area and freezes it can do damage. In addition it allows any water left in the block to drain out freely.

correct for storage in fact I change the gear lube in fall to make sure there is no water in it over winter.. I meant when OP was towing.. he was so worried about the tubes but didn't mention the motor.. seen more of those drag on the ground coming into and out of ramps than the tubes..

Happy to report the 8" clearance was sufficient for the 100+ mile trip as well as putting in and taking out. YMMV
