Anybody here have any gambrel roof experience? I want to build a barn with a Gambrel roof and want to be sure I do it right so I am looking for opinions, suggestions, even free plans would be great.

I want the barn to be 36' wide, and about 60' long. I will be doing it myself as I have time.

Any offerings would be great.

Thanks in advance

Plans are not free, but a good resource is Barn Plans

Here's a front view of the 24x36 (original) my 13 year old son and I built in 1973. Later another son helped add the shed additon another 24x36.
Bought "salvage" metal for roof.

Thats one heck of a barn. Did the Amish put the whole barn up for you?

I built a barn 15 years ago and went with a gambrel roof. There is a company near where I live that builds roof trusses which I used instead of rafters. I just sat down with the gent at the factory and he mocked up designs on his computer for me to choose the roof line I liked. They delivered the trusses to my building site and lifted them onto my already standing walls. All I had to do was tip them up and secure them. The space inside is big.. not much smaller than the main floor which is 24X48 feet. Gambrel is the way to go. Put big windows in each end for light.

I had quotes from durabuilt which was a good price, and I was about to sign contract, and at the time we were building a large industrial washer powder coating system for a close by amish family/company. well the brother was a builder for them 100% amish but with a deacon who embraced ways to make life easier (cell phones indoor plumbing ect.) anyhow the barn/shop we were putting this equipment into was built by the brother/family & it was really well built. so I talked to him & got a better price & better what I figured would be a better support. I did the leveling / grading work, they did pretty much every thing else including bring in the lumber (posts are treated to a .60 as well as the skirting. Biggest thing I had problems with was the t1-11 pulled away from the 2x4s due to staples were not rust resistant enough or sized improperly. I've since had to go back & re-nail (actually used galv deck screws to pull it all back down...) and they vanished for 20 days for deer season which started a big rain/snow which damaged some of my 2nd floor OSB decking as it sat wet for most of November uncovered.

all in all it was less than 20K under roof. which was less than durabuilt price but only by a little bit and I didn't really give them a chance to price aginst the amish crew who did it. I've since done more work for those amish family on repair maintain the equipment for them so I think I've gotten a good deal anyways...
