Ice Cream spade?

Mike, I never thought about it, but is there some kind of preservative in commercial ice cream? I know my Mother said she couldn't drink canned pineapple juice; that it would make her sick. But when she went to Hawaii, she learned it was the preservative and she enjoyed drinking lots of real fresh pineapple juice.

White Mountain makes an excellent 6 quart hand crank jobber. They sell them at Rural King around here. My wife couldn't believe I had such an out dated piece of junk when we got married and used to make fun of me for having the hand crank version when there's electric ones for sale everywhere.

After several years of marriage and many gallons of homemade vanilla ice cream, she has come to realize that cranking the ice cream is part of the fun.

I got my love of hand cranked ice cream from my grandpa, who always pours the leftover brine over the asparagus plants in his garden. It keeps the weeds down and doesn't affect the asparagus. He gave me a bag of seeds from his plants for my birthday last weekend and I'm going to plant them tomorrow and test out the anti-weed brine technique next summer.

Well, depending on the brand, there's all kinds of "stuff" in there. The only ingredients I can remember off the top of my head are Carageenan and Guar Gum. These are both thickeners. There's a LOT in some brands. Usually the cheaper it is the more chemicals are in there.

Yep, Mike, I have one tub of cheap vanilla ice cream from Walmart that I used to make myself chocolate malts with, and I just went and looked and it does have a few chemical names. But the very last ingredient says "contains milk".

Reminds me of a warning I saw on a jar of peanut butter a couple months ago:

"Alergy warning, this product may contain peanuts and other tree nuts, processed on shared equipment in a plant that also processes nuts."

Now what brain surgeon bean counter super lawyer figure dthay had to put a 'may contain peanuts' warning on a jar of ^%$#@*& peanut butter.

My gosh.. I -HOPE- it contains some peanuts.. sheesh!

I wish this one was a joke.. but it isn't.. I read it on a jar I was buying at walmart.. can't remember if it was PP, skippy or jiff.. or 'great value'.. etc.. as we will eat any of those..

Chris, you gotta remember, we live in a time when there's more lemon in your furniture polish than there is in your lemon drink.

And if that peanut butter happens to be from CHINA... ?

Yep.. so true.

As I recall .. australia just had to recall some tows that whn / if ingested, the chemical makeup of the toy parts breaks down into GHB.. that really bad drug.. etc.. nice one china!

Yeppers.. just read about a toddler in jacksonville florida.. just a bit north of me that was poisoned from the chinese junk ... Maybee we shouldn't be focusing all of our security interests on iraq/iran/afgan.. etc.. Hmmmm,...
