I have to replace some vinyl siding sections. It's been years since I installed vinyl on a shed I built. I have the tool and several articles on replacing a piece here and there so I think I can handle that part.

What I don't know is how to identify the make. Are there markings on the backside? Thanks in advance.

Some siding has the name and style inkjetted onto the area near the nailing flange every couple feet. My siding brand does. Maybe try pulling a section off and have a look on the backside.

If nothing there, take the now removed piece to a couple stores and compare.

That's what I had been expecting to have to do. I have not checked any lumber yards yet. I wonder if I will have to buy a whole box? I only need to replace a half a dozen pieces or so.

Depends, some stores sell by the piece (for common products), some by the box. If your siding is a unique colour or profile you may have to buy a whole box regardless because it would have to be ordered.

One more potential pitfall is dye batches change frequently. Even new siding can be mismatched! Let alone what the sun will do by fading the colour of the existing siding. You might end up robbing old siding from the back to put on the front or sides so the colour wont be too bad where youd see it..

Be sure and measure the width as they come in different sizes. Some list them by total width, i.e. 10" or 11" while others list them as 4.5" and 5".

Yep, You might want to remove a whole side (the rear is best)and use it to repair individual pieces on the rest of the building, and buy the closest match you can find due to the fading, or different manufacturer to do the back.

Did this when I replaced a double French door, and you have to look hard to see the different colors from one side to another.

Depending on where the piece your replacing is.... it has faded its just a question of how much. I found that you want to get it close then go steal one that is in the same amount of sun from a side no ones sees and swap that out with the new one.

Thanks for all the feedback. The damaged is all on the backside of the house but it does get alot of sun. The color is yellow. My garage has two nine by seven doors with about three feet or four feet of siding over the doors and another fifteen or so feet of solid wall to the left of the doors. Once I get the brand and a source tracked down I will take some measurements to see how feasible it will be to replace that wall and use the old for patching.

I am prepping the house for eventual sale so I need to make it look correct else the color fade would not faze me.
