Driving home this evening I pulled out too close for comfort in front of an SUV that was going about 50 MPH. The driver honked at me. I didn't see the SUV until I was already pulling out onto the road. It was late dusk, almost night time dark, the SUV was black, and had no lights on. Not even daytime driving lights. It was totally dark. How the hell was I supposed to see the vehicle? I coulda been T-boned. The only vehicle I could see on the road was way far away and I could only make out its lights so I thought I was safe. So the IDIOT driving the black SUV with no lights on honks at me because I pulled out too close. If I could have seen the vehicle I wouldn't have pulled out. What is wrong with people that drive with no lights at dusk? GRRR.

Had the same thing in the fog! Some with no lights and others with DRL's which meant no lights in the rear! Stupid kills!

I've been seeing a lot of this lately. I blame it on auto on headlights. Some people are so used to them they don't confirm that their lights are on. I see lots with just daytime running lights on, and some with none at all. Dash lights come on with daytime running lights I believe, allowing a false sense of security. Manufacturers should only make the dash lights come on with the actual full compliment of lights. It may help.

For some people it's a macho thing: I can see the road. Sometimes it's just that somebody forgot, but those people won't get POed at you for their mistake.

But that's only half of their responsibility. They need the be able to be seen as well.

That's why I enjoy riding motorcycles. I KNOW I am responsible for every other driver on the road as well as myself.
Keeps me aware! On my toes. responsible! The penalty for not, can be quite harsh.

If you feel a rant about idiots will reduce their numbers, welll.......

Less than a month ago I emailed the state Dept of Highway Safety about this same issue. If it saves one life, my rant was worth it. I've been scraping people off the roadway or cutting them out of vehicles for over 40 years due to their mistakes or the mistakes of others. If I can prevent someone from having to see some of the things I have seen in doing so, I figure it's worth it.

If there had been an accident who do you think would have been charged?

Lots of child trafficking are with black SUVs and no lights to keep literally hidden on the rural roadways. Their movements are often at night like this. How they know where the road is? They are using night vision devices. Much of the time these people are heavily armed too. If you did get a glimpse of the plate, chances are, its out of state.

Yeah it is a huge problem I've been noticing. Also the DTRs are bad because idiots rely on them vs. putting on their light and then as was stated they have no lights in the rear. This is something automakers could fix.

I'm not a fan of regulation usually but the headlight thing should not be left up to idiot drivers. Lights should just always be on in my opinion.
