watched a semi tractor pulling a 53' trailer go by... Duh? This guy MUST be lost? Dinky little back road that I live on can barely handle cars!

Man you gave me a flash back. Before I got married I worked one winter for a rigger taking apart a factory. We loaded a huge steam dryer on a special trailer and you could see the road peel up behind that rig as he left.
Ah the good old days.

Was out in the yard yesterday and watched a semi tractor pulling a 53' trailer go by... Duh? This guy MUST be lost? Dinky little back road that I live on can barely handle cars! It was fun watching the large wreaker pull that rig out of the ditch at the end of the road when he had no place to turn.

Being lost with a big truck sucks. Ive been there and done that more than I would like to admit. Ive had to turn around in farm lanes with a 53. You cant imagine the number of times Ive felt like calling a cab and just leaving the truck and trailer for someone else to figure out how to get turned around. Ive backed the length of a couple neighborhoods because I ran out of road. I hadnt been driving for a week before I found myself lost in a not so nice part of downtown Washington DC. I had to use all the street plus most of the sidewalks to get out of that jamb. Talk about trial by fire, but its all good because Ive only been driving for a couple years but theres not much that rattles me now.

When I lived in Charleston, SC a large tractor came off a trailer and killed a women, and maybe her kid too, on the Cooper River bridge. It made the news in a big way. Charleston was, and still is growing. Lots of construction equipment getting moved around etc. Quite a flap.

Not a week later I saw a dump truck pulling a huge TLB on a trailer....NO CHAINS at all. I commented to my wife and, being a wife, she assured me that I must be mistaken and just can't see the chains. Being a husband I pulled up next to the trailer at a stop light. No chains. Nothing.

I like to think common sense and good basic safety rules go a long way. Some folks can take safety stuff too far and get a little over zealous. But as long as there are people in this world that would tow a huge TLB, in busy suburban traffic with nothing securing it.....well, maybe we need the safety nuts to balance them out a little.
