The battle over global warming has raged for more than a decade, with experts still stunned by the willingness of their political opponents to distort scientific conclusions.

That one sentence shows the bias of the author of the article (typical bias from the Washington Post, btw).
The last controversy wasn't the "opponents", it was the revelation of the proponents' purposeful distortion of their findings. And that is what destroyed the credibility of the climatologists' global warming is man-made theory. Unfortunately, that result sullied all scientific credibility.
