I am looking at an 2640 with loader. Can anyone tell me what trans comes in the 2640. It has a loader and was wondering if it cam with a reverser for loader work. I have looked on tractor data and dont see any thing about trans! Any body have one is this tractor a choice for loader work and general utility work?

I want to think those tractors had a power shift but I'm not 100% sure.

Those tractors were offered with an 8x4 or 16x8, don't think a reverser or shuttle was available.

You could get the collar shift, 4spd with two ranges, plus reverse (8x4). You have to come to a complete stop and clutch for any gear or range change.

OR collar shift with HI-LO, which allowed shifting what ever gear you were in, down lower, ((LO) and back up, (HI) without clutching, But gear or range changes still required a complete stop and clutching, just not for HI-LO for the range gear you are currently in. LO is approx 25% drop in speed.

OR a Reverser trans. 4spd with two ranges, Forward or reverse in any gear without clutching (8x8). Reverse is 16% faster in each gear, than forward. Still required complete stop and clutching for gear or range changes, just not forward or reverse.

Never pull start a HI-LO or Reverser equipped tractor

I thought they were also offered with the synchroshift?
They are great tractors but if you want to use it for loader/utility work then you really want to at least have a reverser tranny. Very powerful for their size and very reliable.

The only ones offered with synchronized transmission were the latest ones. They had the "tiger-striped" decals on the hood. serial number above 341,000.

I've spent a lot of time on a 6000 hr. JD2640. 8x4 transmission. Hydraulics always a problem on that tractor....maybe just that one.

There's a metal hydraulic line to the right of the steering column and just above the brake pedals. I've had it break and fill my shoe with hydraulic fluid 3 times in the last two years. First time I was on the road and lost steering when it let go.

The local dealership stocks that exact part, so the problem's probably somewhat common. The owner has replaced that line at least 3 times that I know of and maybe many times more. Even tried to substitute a flexible hose. Never heard why that idea didn't work.

The tractor is always wet with hydraulic oil and leaks in other areas as well. Recently I saw another old 2640 in a field and looked it over as well as I could from the road. No sign of leakage on that tractor, so maybe they weren't all like the one I've used.

Other than that, wellll, it doesn't like to start when temperatures drop to the 40s. I've always thought it used a lot of fuel for the work it did. Never got a gph figure for it, just seemed to be pumping a lot of fuel in it. Morning service was top off the fuel and the hydraulic reservoir....usually took a half gallon of hydraulic oil.

Hate being sent out on a job with that tractor because chances are 50-50 that the tractor won't be able to finish it. It's easy to find, though. Just follow the fresh oil drip trail.

45 degrees last night. The 2640 needed a jump this morning to get going. Even then it cranked quite awhile. It's consistent anyway.

A correction on the last post. The tractor did NOT need a half gallon of hydraulic oil every morning. But it wasn't at all uncommon for it to need that much.

I had a 2640 for several years with the 8x4 transmission. It was a great tractor and had the 146 loader. The only problems I had were a leaking hydraulic line and cold start. It had an ether starting aid that didn't work. When temp was 40 or below, I made a point of plugging in the block heater for about 15 minutes before starting. Never failed to start then. Even though it didn't have the reverser, I never had any problem with forward and reverse using the loader. Didn't grind the gears either. Just learned the timing of how to shift.
