Ignorant 3-point hitch question

Dreaming --- the lower lift arms are free floating. Raised and lowered by the vertical lift links attached to your upper lift arms. The uppers can't be raised or lowered by hand.

Very few 3PH's have the ability to apply downpressure or "lock" the arms.

Thanks. I was worried because I can raise the upper links by hand by lifting on the drawbar attached between the lower links. I thought I was done hallucinating in the '60s. Guess not . . . .

There is a rod connected to the rockshaft that is rounded that slips into the piston that is conical on the inside. This rod is free from the piston allowing the arms to lift independent of the piston.

I agree with Kenny.. on most tractors there is no downpressure.. thus you can freely lift the upper and lower lift arms ( they are linked! )..

My Kubota has a valve which basicly regulates the rate of flow to the 3pt. I can shut it off entirely. I never checked it out, but is it possible one could "lock" the 3pt because if the valve is closed the cylinder is locked on one side? I do know it will not go down if the valve is shut. Never tried it pulling up.

There is NO hard coupling from the 3pt lift arms to the HYD piston. ther is usually a dogbone that is loosly coupled to a cam on the 3pt rock shaft, and the other end of that dogbon rides in the cup shaped head of the piston.
As you've been told.. you should be able to lift the arms UP.
the 'lock' for the 3pt merely prevents oil from exhausting from the lift cyl.. IE.. if the lift piston seals leak.. the lock is not going to even hold the arms up long.. etc.

You may be remembering correctly that you could not lift the arms buy hand.
Due to paint or rust on the pivot points of the lift arms. I have one that will freeze up to hand lift it allowed to sit for a while. So I learned to keep them oiled. If you used a spreader it could be residue or chemical reaction going on.

Right on. Lifting the arm will retract the ramrod away from the piston hence allowing it to move up. The opposite is not true if the the hyd fluid is allowed to return to the reservoir thru the spool valve.
