IH 3444 steering problem help

trying to get an old IH 3444 going agIN nd need help. I got it running but when i tried to move it I push the selector valve down and the steering wheel swings by its self full right and i cant move it back. With selector valve up there is no steering at all the wheel just spins. Any suggestions ?

I hate to move this up but guys I'm really stuck. Doesn't anyone know how these hydraulic steering machines work? I hate to just take it apart for no reason. But no matter what the wheel just spins all the way to the right. Please suggest somthing

Sorry, I do not remember experiencing anything like you are describing. We ran a lot of IH on the farm. I will ask Dad if he has any ideas next time I talk to him. The closest thing I remember was a rear axle seal and bearing failure on a 1586. In that case we lost all hydraulics and the axel walked out dropping the tractor in the field. One of my favorite days because that thing was wore out and I got a new 5488 that day! Lol.

Of course checking fluid levels along with filters and screens is a great place to start. Hopefully you will get some help soon.

Thanks, and yeah i did check fluid level and filters are fairly new. I also lifted the front wheels off the ground and turn the steering wheel in both directions but it didn't move the wheels at all. and if i push the switch down so i can get stering it just dead pins to the right.

Sounds like something amiss in the steering box itself. It should move the wheels even with tractor not running if I remember correctly. Of course our tractors were ag and not industrial but I would think they would work the same. Not familiar with the 3444.

I don't think so. From what little I've found on these onthe net they made 2 different kind. On had an actual linkage that when from the box to the wheels with power assist and the other just had hydraulic hoses. underneath the steering wheel there is just a small round box like 4 inch round and maybe 2 inches thick with 2 hoses running to it.

this is what is under the steering wheel. I dont have mine out yet but this is what it looks like.

So it looks like you have hyd steering.
Now It should be one pump if I remember right. Do you have plenty of fluid in the tractor? And do you have an other hyd other than the 3 pt lift. Do they work well?

its has a backhoe and a front end loader and they all work on. its full of fluid. its just when i push the backhoe valve down it spins to the right. Some people say i should have steering no matter where the valve is . but i never have then i pull the valve up for backhoe i lose steering.
