What happened?? I drove my tractor on my trailer and shut it down. I then put the shift lever in neutral and started the engine to raise the brush hog.
The tractor was stuck in reverse even with the 4 speed shift lever in neutral. If I put it in any gear (even R) it kills the engine when I let out the clutch. I can only drive it in reverse with the shift lever in neutral by letting out the clutch.
Any ideas what happened?

I don' know that transmission but I had that problem. I took off the trans tower. The slector plate had two bolts in it and one had fallen out. I drilled the plate and the bolt heads and laced them and the problem was solved. If I can find a picture I'll post it. I did post the fix in Chinese tractor the thread was called "gear confusion". Richard found one here it is:

Valley,
Thanks for the info. I reviewed your previous post and especially appreciate the pictures of your solution. I will let you know what I find.

I had a 354, same transmission , do that. It's been a long time, here's what I remember. The little ball on the end of the shift leaver is worn. There is a pin that holds the lever in the shift tower, remove the pin and the lever, look down in the shift tower and you will see a slot in the shift bars. Take a big screwdriver and line up the slots and reinstall the lever. If I left out some details post in the IH forum and someone will have the correct poop.

IT might not hurt to have some weld put on the end of the ball and resize it to the rails.

Tractor was put in shop last week. This is what the mechanic told me:

"We removed the shifter cover, all your gears and sliders looked O.K. for the age of the tractor. We then moved on to the cover itself. This is where we found the problem, one of the detents on the shifter rail had stuck. This is not uncommon on older tractors. We freed the rail up. The problem with that is we don't how long it will work, could be 5 years or 5 days. In short the shifter cover is not worn out, But like me it has a little age on it. We don't know anything you should or should not do so it won't happen again."

Has anyone seen this or know of a remendy for it? Do you have a picture or drawing? Thanks.

This isn't that uncommon on lots of old linkages. Best cure (without new parts) is not shifting fast. Make your moves deliberate and slowed down, and give the old parts a chance to align with each other before moving.
