I have been trying to find the lift capacity of my grandad's IH 404, but I haven't been able to find anything. Does anyone know the lift capacity? Or the weight of the heaviest attachment that they are using with theirs?

I would say somewhere around 3000lbs as a max. 2000 to 2500 comfortably. That would be at measured the pins.

According to Tractordata the 404 is around a mid to high 30s horsepower tractor and only weighs 3,260 pounds. I would not want to try lifting more than 2,000 pounds at the rear.

Just my 2 cents.

After looking at all of the no-till drills, I'm leaning towards the Tar River SAYA-505 due to price and weight. It looks like the empty weight is 1,036, and I'll only be planting an acre or two at a time so I wouldn't be adding much weight in seed. I'm thinking that is my best bet.

2000 to 2500 seems to be the consensus that I have received from this question. I think I have settled on the Tar River SAYA-505 since the empty weight is 1,036. Should work for the small areas that I'll be planting.

Just something to keep in mind is that lift capacity is rated at the rear lift arm ends. The further the weight moves out from those ends the more stress is placed on the tractor. I had a JD 1070 that was similar in horse power and weight to yours and it's max lift capacity was around 2000 pounds at the ends. My current tractor has lift capacity closer to 3000 pounds, yet in the manual it states not to go beyond a 1000 pound implement. I imagine this has to do with weight being beyond the rear ends as well as the possibility of the implement bouncing around back there when lifted and traveling on uneven ground.

I don't know your tractor model very well but just thought I would share some things to consider.

Oh, and some front weights might also be needed to keep the front end planted.

Please let us know how things go!!
