IH 5100

Ive just purchased an IH 5100 "soybean special" box drill. Not knowing what a SS is, I researched others for sale and the SS is cheaper than a reg 5100. Why is that? What did I give up, and will this hinder its use planting sunflowers???

The soybean special had slow down sprokets to try not to damage the soybean seed. Also had a heavier pipe on the lift cylinder and some had the press wheels for depth controll behind the seed disks. The press wheel were pretty cheaply made and got expensive to keep in shape.

How much did you pay for it and what size is it?

As for the sunflowers, I don't think it will hurt you as you but I have never used the soybean special. I would think you could remove the gear if you wanted to.

There were other options available and the most costly one that might enter in here is the Fertilizer system. They were refered to as combo's in grain drill talk and maybe your unit doesn't have the ability to use it. The combo's also normally failed sooner if they weren't taken care of as the fertilizer will induce rust quickly.

It seems like very few people took the time required to clean the fertilizer compartments out properly. I do not find very many around here that you can use the fertilizer side still without spending a lot of time and money to fix them up again.

Ok Ive owned this for a year now. It planted a beautiful stand of sunflowers.
the population was way to high, but good ground made it pop anyway.
So now Im planning for 08 use.
There is no fert or small seed box.
Rather than 2 trips to rent the fancy no till couldnt I just use this to resow an orchard grass crop?
Seems like I could tape and then set the drill to large spacing and slow the seed down. It would wasted some, but seed is cheaper than gas and time.
OR...can small boxes be founded and added?

What size unit is your drill? They size them in seven or six inch spacing and the seven inch spacing is normally in odd numbers except 18 holes and the six inch is in even numbers The small seed hoppers are the same for 510 models and 5100.
It would be the same small seed hoppers for 21x7" to 24x6" or 18x7" to 20x6"

I had a contact from someone that had small seed boxes for a 5100 but in all my searching I only had one guy contact me. If you go to a Case-IH dealer they will have to sell the small seed attachment to you piece by piece and it will be cheaper to buy another drill

this is a soybean special 7 inch spacing...18 holes I think.
Boy that figures about the guy with boxes...I would have sent you a basket of flowers for his number.
