Why is it some people take the saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure" to mean "I'll dump my garbage out in the country on somebody else's land"?
I have picked up several mattresses, TVs, couches, etc. Not to mention all the bags of just household garbage. We have found addresses, names and such and the worst that happens is the county deputy has the trash picked up by the offending party. Some people don't even have the common courtesy to dump it in the ditches. I have had to move furniture out of the road on the way to work in the AM. I try to keep it picked up as I think it would be worse if allowed to stack up (the old "everyone else is doing it" attitude).
Here's the kicker, we live right across I-30 from a Waste Management landfill. You can see the "mountain" from my driveway. I think a lot of folks get to the landfill, are told the fees for dumping it, and turn around and find a nice, secluded county road.
Just once I'd like to catch one of them. Y'all think someone hanging by their thumbs w/ a "Illegal Dumper" sign around their neck would be a deterrent?
Sorry for the rant. The dumped animals thread got me started.

Bingo, you can bet that the trash being dumped made its way in and then out of the dump pay gate. I agree that it is very important to remove the dumped trash since leaving it will just encourage more. Even if you just collect it in a pile out of site somewhere.

We had a load of carpet dumped in the entrance of a hay meadow a few years ago. There was a waybill in the pile where the carpet was delivered to a dealer about 30 miles away. We called the law, they called the dealer, the dealer picked up the carpet. Come to find out, the driver had been pocketing the dump fee and finding other ways of disposing of the used carpet. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Come to think of it, wasn't too long after that I found Meth lab in a duffle bag on the same place. Coincedence? hmmmmmm....

Years ago I watched a guy haul a trailer of obvious construction debris up the road I lived on. Since there were only six residents on the road (and he wasn't one of them) I knew full well what he was up to.

I just stood at the end of my drive with a piece of paper and pencil for his return trip, only one way out. I know he saw what I was doing and he tried to kick up as much dust as possible but I still got his plate.

I gave the info to the property owner (he didn't live there but you wouldn't know it from all the trash) and he sued the guy for full cleanup of his property, never did see that guy after that.

Larry,

Hearing stories like yours is what makes it all worthwhile.

Thanks,

Maybe not...
In the city of Grand Prairie, TX, the residents have free entry to the city dump with a copy of their water bill. Even so, semi-rural areas are constantly dumping grounds for furniture and household trash. I prefer to think it's a "don't care" mentality. Since the dump isn't open 24 hours, the perps just can't be bothered with waiting. Although, if there was a fee at the dump, I'm sure the problem would be much worse. Not charging fees at the dump is a good idea for at least helping to keep our streets clean. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Not charging fees at the dump is a good idea .... yeah - but a lot of landfills are privately owned and operated now as a "for profit" enterprise. Can't see them going for a "no fee" agreement unless the local govmint pays for it.

I used to be able to haul my own trash to the dump (transfer station) in Dallas at no cost, but then they started charging everyone, including City vehicles; craziest thing I ever heard of. When I was in charge of the auto pound, I had to send cash with the City pickup when we had to dispose of anything. Fortunately, where we live now, I can haul stuff to the landfill just by showing a drivers license and/or water bill, as you said.

Lucky dog /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Come on over here, your jaw would drop to the floor!

Our local dump is a transfer station now. They are like $75 or $85 a ton to dump dirt, concrete ect.

A 25" TV is about $50 to dump.

You can only recycle oils/chemicals two days a week.

Matresses, refridgeraters ect are all in the $25-50 range. They charge for batteries, compurters, monitors. Those Fridges, they are really a pain, because before they can scrap the freon has to be drained(by the folks that scrap them at the dump). If you have a car tire on a rim, it's about $25.

On the backroads around here, it is no wonder people dump stuff. I abhore people doing that, but it is no wonder.

WOW! At those prices I can understand why people do it too.

People here complain at $30/ton, other construction debris is at the standard $5/ ton rate

( A 25" TV is about $50 to dump...matresses, refridgeraters ect are all in the $25-50 range )
$7.50 per appliance

( They charge for batteries )
Free if you drop it off, requires a "trash tag" ($1.50) if picked up

And yet our ditches are full too. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
